Lohri Celebrations in India

After New year celebrations, Lohri is the festival celebrated in North India on 13th of January every year.  Lohri festival is celebrated mostly in the Punjab and Haryana region of North India. As in these states, the harvest festival is known as Lohri and this festival is the most celebrated festivals in the region.

On the occasion of Lohri, from smartphones people sent Lohri Shayari to loved ones.  Lohri is the festival when people celebrate the harvesting of the Rabi (winter) crops and together they celebrate the festival. Lohri is the great significance for the people of Punjab as it marks the harvesting season in Punjab and the end of winter season. People celebrate this day by decorating the dining table with Revri, Moongfali, peanuts, popcorns and other dry fruits.

This is the time when people sung their traditional songs and perform traditional dance and express their happiness towards the festival. It is also the time when people dress up nicely for the long-awaited bonfire festival. In morning children go from door to door singing in praise of Dulha Bhatti da and asking money, sweets from people, Dulha Bhatti is a character who helped poor people and people also believed that he once helped a lowly village girl out of poverty by finding her a husband.

Lohri is celebrated with bonfire and lights without these the festivals of Lohri is nothing or we can say that Bonfire is the main part of the Lohri. It is made in the evening symbolizes Agni, the Hindu of God fire.  Family members, relatives, and neighbors together sit in a circle near the bonfire and offer prayers to Agani. On the Lohri bonfire is symbolic of the homage to the Sun God for bringing in warmth. People worshipped Agni by throwing food such as popcorn and rice into the flames.

After marriage or a birth of the child at home, double the celebration of Lohri. The family organized the function of Lohri at large scale by inviting friends and family for a dinner at Lohri function. People celebrate the day by having Sarson ka Saag and Makki ki roti for dinner and enjoy the folk songs. Late night the festival ends with the prayers for the good harvest.
